My weekend in Kaunas and Vilnius (June)

Why Lithuania?

The purpose of the flight was the Sting concert that took place in Kauans. After checking prices for the concert I immediately booked the flights. This time , Ryanair flights were the most suitable for us.

Ryanair flight from Tel Aviv to Kaunas was delayed while we were on the plane by an hour. Bummer! I suggest to always have a movie downloaded on Netflix in case there are delays or if you get bored on flight. (Note: There’s a 30 day free trial on Netflix).

Food on plane – since this was a low cost flight food and drinks were not included ,I suggest that if you don’t want to buy snacks on board , be prepared with a snack or a sandwich in advance.

Hotel- right after I booked the flight tickets I started looking for a hotel in the center of the town. Luckily, I found a great price and we stayed at the Kaunas hotel in the center of town. Price included breakfast which had a great variety of cheese, ham, eggs, fruit ( great pineapple!!) , yogurts, vegetables, coffee etc etc.
I was looking forward to swim in the indoor pool (as advertised) but it was a really tiny one (looks more like a big jaccuzi).

So….since there was a delay with the flight and until we headed out with the rental car , we only arrived to the city (Kaunas) late afternoon .

SIM card – you can buy one immediately when you exit customs in the Kiosk. It takes a few minutes to work, so be patient.

We parked our car at the hotel parking and headed to the old city.

Unfortunately, there were many constructions going on in Kaunas so the main pedestrian avenue is closed but all shops, cafes etc are OPEN.
The Old city is smaller than that of other European cities I visited. I think that one or one and a half days is more than enough.

Take a walk around the old city, walk up to the river and eat in one of the numerous restaurants around the old city. There are lots of funny statues around town. Children (and adults) will enjoy taking pictures with them.

Food in Lithuania is not expensive. It’s not as cheap as Rumania or Poland but still cheap compared to other European cities. We ate at Avilys. It was so good that we went to eat there twice.

On the next day, we took the car and drove up to Pažaislis monastery and church. It’s a beautiful complex. You can learn all about it in this link. I just want you to see how beautiful it is.

We drove another minute and walked around the marina. Here are some of my photo shoots so you can get an impression of the place.

Another impressive and creative place is Galeria Kiemo.  Its an open street art gallery in a courtyard. Take your time there since some of the artworks are hiding between the buildings.

Vilnius

Children love water! There is a big square (Lukiškių aikštė) with small splashing fountains where children can run around and have fun.

Did I mention we were with another couple? So, we were. They are really enthusiastic about churches so while they went to see a church nearby, we grabbed a quick bite at a Vietnamese restaurant. It was very good!

Later we walked around the old town, saw the beautiful gems and …yep, ate again! My girls were in Vilnius in the winter and told me I had to eat in the pancake restaurant they ate. So, of course, I couldn’t let my girls down. This place is heaven for children. There are lots of toppings and fillings for the waffles and the pancakes. The restaurant is decorated like Alice in the Wonderland.

We walked around the Jewish Ghetto , ate the best pavlova ever at this small café and continued back to our car. On our way we saw the beautiful cathedral.

On the way back to Kaunas , we stopped at the beautiful village Trakai . We walked around the lake, and took a pedal boat (one hour rent = 10 euros). You can take the boat or walk to the castle.

Till next time, bye, Kinneret
